Fifteen thousand tons of pressed Sicilian olives; 90% of the total production of PDO certified Val di Mazara oil. Scores of awards and recognition achieved over the years including the 2020 NYIOOC gold medal for our Organic Sicilian Extra Virgin Olive Oil IGP. These are just some of the statistics of Bono, a family-owned olive oil company that has been operating in Sciacca, the cradle of Sicilian olive oil production, since 1934. Now, the company has announced a new line of designer labels born from a collaboration with the artist and artisan, Alice Valenti.

Passion is central to the Bono family story. A passion and love for the land that has been producing world class olive oil for three generations. Today, Bono is the largest Sicilian oil mill, selling the highest volume of extra virgin olive oil on the island, and producing and selling the most PDO and IGP-certified oils as well.

According to data from Italia Olivicola, PDO Val di Mazara is one of the most important olive oil denominations in Italy, together with the PDO Terra di Bari and IGP Toscana. The Val di Mazara is a PDO (short for Protected Designation of Origin) that the Bono family knows very well and works with every day thanks to its network of almost 1,400 affiliated farms.

The path taken by the Bono family in 2021 focuses on the beauty and richness of Sicilian traditions. A manifestation of commitment, competence and transparency that reconfirms the vocation of the Bono family. The collaboration between Bono and Alice Valenti was born from our shared passion for Sicilian history. Alice Valenti is one of the most accomplished artists of Sicilian folklore, being the only woman to have painted Sicilian carts, an art she learned from master Domenico Di Mauro. Her technique and her unique vision have already led her to collaborate with other famous companies and brands, such as Dolce & Gabbana for which she hand-decorated some collectible refrigerators in collaboration with Smeg, the appliance company.

Each oil has a character and soul that distinguishes itself and makes it unique in flavor and characteristics. From this, the new Bono labels were born, capable on their own of communicating the personality of their unique oil.

The Bono oils came to life through the champions of the Opera dei Pupi, proclaimed in 2001 by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral heritage of humanity. And therefore the beautiful and valiant warrior Bradamante for Sicily PGI oil; the wise and courteous Regina Galerana for Val di Mazara DOP oil; the courageous and sincere Orlando for the Bono extra virgin olive oil; the strong and astute Marsilio, King of Zaragoza, for Valle del Belice PDO oil; the noble and generous Emperor Charlemagne for filtered and unfiltered Italian extra virgin olive oil; and the pure and daring warrior, Ideo, for unfiltered extra virgin olive oil. A total of six paladins for six oils of great flavor and personality.

Through the artistic creativity of Alice Valenti, our new labels are an expression of Sicily and a tribute to its rich history. In addition to a new look to our bottles, this project aims to communicate the company philosophy based on transparency and product traceability. Precisely for this reason, each bottle has a code that allows you to identify everything from who bottled the oil to the plants from which the olives come.

Many of Bono’s values find expression in this project: our deep connection with the territory, transparency in sourcing and production, and the enhancement of the Sicilian artistic and cultural heritage. The new Bono designer labels by Alice Valenti will soon be available on all supermarket shelves.
